January is Vocational Service Month, but what does that mean? Vocation is sort of an old-fashioned term for your profession. A member’s professional skills are very important in Rotary, as the goal of the organization is to bring together a diverse group of people who can apply their skills in serving their community.

How does this translate in our club?

We have a local attorney who is great at helping us with our club’s bylaws (or operating rules).

We have a local financial advisor who teaches us how to use Quick Books to manage the club budget.

The Baldwinsville School superintendents are in the club, as well as the president of the teacher’s association, which helps us make connections in the schools to provide dictionaries each year and do our backpack program.

The local librarians are also members, which helps keep us connected to everything happening at this great community resource and with our book club.

Members who are also part of our village and local government help us identify community needs and understand how to work with local leadership to make things happen.

Of course, we have Dawn from Canal Walk Café catering our lunches each week.

And even myself, working in advertising, handling the digital media and public relations for the club.

Sometimes people end up working in a job that doesn’t give them the opportunity to practice their skills. Sometimes that skill is your hobby. Rotary can be the perfect place for that too! It’s been a great place for many members to get creative, continue work they love even after retirement and more.
The best part? It doesn’t feel like work when you’re having fun with our group!

So in January we celebrate the diversity of our member’s vocations and the role they play in our ability to put Service Above Self!

Are you ready to turn your strengths into action and join leaders in the Baldwinsville community to give back? We have many opportunities to get to know us in the coming months – two meetings each week, The Big Chill on Saturday, January 21st, our annual Soup ‘n Snowshoe on February 11th and a Painting With A Twist party on February 21st. Plenty of chances to observe at a meeting, help us with a volunteer project and just be social to get to know our group. We’d love to have you!
