Serving Baldwinsville's Senior Citizens
We take pride in this annual service project done in collaboration with Canton Woods Senior Center, where we provide a free meal and entertainment to about 100 local seniors each summer. The club's fundraising covers the cost of food, live music and supplies, while volunteers set the menu, order the food, and come to serve our seniors.
How it Works
- Seniors register with Canton Woods to attend and then show up the day of to enjoy social time, entertainment, and a free picnic meal
- The seniors stay seated and Rotary volunteers bring them their drinks, meals and a dessert
- Entertainment has varied over the years, but typically includes music we know the seniors will enjoy
Why it Matters
Our elders are an important part of any community and we want to honor them with this contribution. It is also important to provide nutritional support and social opportunities to our aging population. Many of our club members are seniors themselves, so we also enjoy inter-generational connections that are made in Rotary and at this event.
Watch for an announcement about the 2026 event later this year!
We never have a shortage of volunteers for this event, but welcome anyone who wishes to join in serving local seniors to contact us!
This History of This Dinner
The Baldwinsville Rotary Club has been serving an annual meal to senior citizens in our community for many decades. The project started as a holiday meal with the event hosted each December. The club partnered with PEACE, Inc. to put on a full turkey dinner, including pumpkin pie, that was served to a couple hundred seniors at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton church. Members would also deliver meals to the homebound. Unfortunately, due to the weather in CNY that time of year, the event had to be cancelled a couple of years in a row. We also realized that there are already a lot of extra resources available in the community around the holidays. So the club decided to switch it up, moving the event to the summer and transforming the meal to a picnic menu. The event is a little smaller now and is held at Canton Woods Senior Center. Volunteers wait on the seniors with classic BBQ sides and provide entertainment that puts a smile on everyone's face. This is one of the most rewarding, hands-on projects the club does and all members look forward to helping out.
